Step 1:

Ok, here’s the image I found after googling ‘VW logo’. Import it into Photoshop (or just copy from google, CRTL+N to open a new document, and CRTL+V to paste). The first job is to make a selection from the white logo. Read on!

Step 2:

Hit ‘L’ on the keyboard to activate the Lasso tool. Now make a selection around the white logo.

Step 3:

We want the outside white area to be black, so CRTL+SHIFT+I to invert the selection and then SHIFT+F5 to bring up the Fill screen. Choose black form the drop down list:

Step 4:

Ok, now we need to separate the black from the white. The best way to do this is go Selection->Color Range. When the screen pops up use the eyedropper to click on the white part of the image.

Step 5:

So you have the white logo selected. CRTL+J two times to copy the selection to two diferent layers. Hit CRTL+D to get rid of the selection.

Step 6:

Also, we don’t need the white logo in the background layer, in fact this will make it look terrible later on. So, Click the background layer to highlight it (it will turn blue) CRTL+A to selection all, and use the Fill command again. I have also hidden the top layer by clicking the eye next to it. You will see why in the next step.
