Step 1
Our first job is to go online and find a good image of a polaroid camera. Don’t forget that size does matter, at least when it comes to photographs. Always try to use large images in your creations. When you have your image in photoshop, you will need to cut it our of the background. To do this, you will have to use the pen tool. Press ‘P’ on the keyboard to activate it then click just inside the camera image. As the camera is quite angular, you won’t need to drag the pen tool points very much.
Step 2
When you’re done, click the paths panel then CRTL+click the work path to convert it into a selection. Then CRTL+C to copy it.
Step 3
For the scene, get your digital camera out and take a shot of something like below. Try to make the angle similar to the polaroid camera. Open the scene image in photoshop and CRTL+V to paste.
Step 4
We are going to have a polaroid photo coming out of the camera, so position it on the edge of the table or whatever you are using as your background. Press ‘B’ to activate the brush tool, and from the drop down menu at the top of the screen choose ‘Behind’. This allows us to paint ‘behind’ the camera but on the same layer. Choose a soft brush and lower the opacity to something like 14%. Now we should have avery subtle shadow to hopefully blend the camera into the background.
Step 5
CRTL+N to open a new document and give it these dimensions. This is going to act as our polaroid snap to put on the table.
Step 6
Now open a photo you want to use. Make a selection using the Marquee tool ‘M’. CRTL+C to copy.
Step 7
CRTL+V to paste onto our new blank document and center it.
Step 8
We’re going to use the curves command to batter the colors a bit. (Polaroids were never much good at taking good photos). CRTL+M to call up the curves screen and move the center point down a little.
Step 9
CRTL+E to merge both layers into one. CRTL+A to selection everything then CRTL+C to copy.
