Tutorial to Create Playing Cards in Photoshop

Alright, working on the spades symbol now, same process as before.

ALT+drag with the move tool, don’t forget to flip it.

That done, merge those layers down also but first make a copy of the white card. Incidentally, I didn’t want any symbols in the middle of my cards, but if you want them go ahead.

Using the guide lines, select the marquee tool and make a rectangular selection.

On a new layer, SHIFT+F5 and fill with 50% gray.

Again, to break up the smooth color, add a noise filter.

This is another useful filter. Go Filter->Sketch->Halftone Pattern. Makes makes a very nice checker pattern.

Now we hit CRTL+U to open up the Hue/Saturation screen. We’re going to give the card some color, so check the ‘Colorize’ box and move the sliders to make the color you like.

Time to add some effects to the cards. Choose each card layer in turn and give them a drop shadow…

…and a bevel.

Cards are seldom completely straight like ours, so we need to rotate them a little and move them on top of each other. Notice that the A layer is at the bottom of the layers and under the other two cards. To rotate, simply hit CRTL+T to enter transform mode, and drag the handle bars that appear. When you’re happy with it, hit enter again.
