Step 1:
Our first job is to scan (or take a digital photo) of the sole of a boot or shoe. You might need to use the levels command (CRTL+L) to make the scan a little brighter.
Step 2:
Now is the time to cut the sole out of the background. The best way of doing this is to use the pen tool (P). Look at the options at the top of the screen and make sure you have ‘paths’ selected (see image). Also, if yo click the little black triangle just to the left of ‘Auto Add/Delete’, you will get a drop down menu with ‘Rubber Band’. Make sure this is clicked, as it makes for a very handy guide whilst drawing with the pen tool. Now make your first point and drag up and to the right:
Step 3:
Continue clicking and dragging all the way around the sole of the boot. Once you are finished, click on the Paths panel:
Step 4:
CRTL+Click the work path thumbnail to turn the path into a selection. Then CRTL+C to copy, open your background image, and CRTL+V to paste. Obviously, this is way too big. With the new boot layer highlighted, CRTL+T to activate the transform mode. Press and hold SHIFT to constrain the aspect ratio, then drag one of the corners inward to make it smaller.
Step 5:
Without leaving the transform mode, right-click and choose ‘Perspective’ from the menu that pops up. We need to make the boot look as if it is lying on the snow, so move the corners of the transform accordingly:
Step 6:
The boot still isn’t very believable. To improve this, change the blending mode to either ‘Soft light’ or ‘Hard light’. In this image, you can see that I have also lowered the Fill to 26%.
Step 7:
Another way of transforming the boot is to use the ‘Warp’. CRTL+T and right-click, then choose Warp from the list. Move the corners around to try to get the shape you want.
